Your Top Three Perfumes - Can You Choose?

Last night, B-man and I were hanging out on Big Red, drinking wine and chatting about ourselves and every random topic on earth.

It's what we do.

I had just applied Fumerie Turque, which was perfect as we enjoyed an unexpected downpour on the deck.

As we talked, I had a dual conversation in my mind that went something like this:

I wonder if Fumerie Turque would make my top 20 perfumes list, or even my top 10.  And what would happen if I had to choose just three perfumes to live with forever?  Just three...what would they be?

Of course, this isn't a novel thought, or a game I've never played with myself.  I've chosen my top 20, top ten and my top five.

But never my top three.

Hmmm, that could mean a green chypre, a dark incense perfume and a rose perfume that I could love forever.

Or, how about an oriental classic, a beautiful amber and one perfect fruity floral.

Must choices will be revealed on July 4th.

What about you?  If you could have only three perfumes for the rest of your life, what would they be?

  1. My problem is that my list will be different next week. That said, at this moment only, here is my list:

    ~ L'Artisan Vanilia
~ CB I Hate Perfume Black March
    ~ Chanel No. 5 EDT

Wow, that was so much harder -- even temporarily -- than I anticipated.

  2. For the rest of my LIFE!? Oh you, this is difficult!!!

  3. Oh boy, don't do this to me...

Ormonde Jayne Tiare, Guerlain Plus Que Jamais and The Different Company Bergamote.

But I reserve the right to wake up in the night screaming that I want to change my selection, which I will!

  4. Nope. I'll just come out and say it: I can't. Cannot do it.

I have tried before, but the list keeps changing depending on the weather and my mood. I could maybe do a Top 20, as you say...

  5. Hi Diana - I know, picking three is hard! But you made fantastic choices - I'm jealous that Chanel No 5 is great on you. And the EDT is the only way to go. Thanks for your comment!

  6. Come on, Frida - I know you can do it!

  7. Vanessa, fantastic choices! None of which I have sampled. And yes, the hard thing is getting through the night with your selection. Do let me know if you change it (if within 24 hours, it doesn't count...). Good to see you!

  8. Hi Muse - I respect your right to rebel against the exercise. Choosing three is definitely a mind game! Even five choices opens things up considerably. Still, I hope you'll re-think it and come back with your top three. I will stay tuned...just in case.

  9. Grrrrrr. I so love picking perfume for the weather that I hate to forego my seasonal things... but here goes, with the ones that I don't think I could stand to be without AND that I could wear all year:

    PdN Le Temps d'une Fete
    Mary Greenwell Plum

    uh, and

There. Done. And I hope you know I am crying for my aldehydes and my greenies and my Alahine over here now. ;)

Oddly, the first two were easy. It's that pesky last choice that's just killing me.

  10. My brain just exploded - it isn't wired to handle killer questions like this!

I know Youth Dew would be my first choice, but the other two...

  11. I just noticed: my No. 19 is glaring at me from the dresser... from *inside* the hatbox. I'm starting to think I'd better lock her up in the closet before I go to bed, lest she take an icepick to me in my sleep. It Does Not Do to Diss the B*tch...

La Myrrhe is offended, too, but she might just stop speaking to me. At least, I don't THINK she'd try to kill me.

  12. Muse, hi - I knew you could do it...kind of. And you're right, it's that last choice that's the hardest! I would have guessed a hundred bucks that Mary Greenwell Plum would show up on your list as it always seems to make you happy. Thanks for coming back!

  13. Hi JoanElaine! Yeah, the questions is 'mind exploding.' Youth Dew is a great first choice. I'll be interested to know your other two...

  14. Muse, now you're making me giggle. I probably would have lost a hundred bucks betting that your beloved La Myrrhe would show up on your list! Yes, you'll need to watch your back with No 19, although if she wants to make the cut, she needs to re-think her attitude.

  15. Hi again,

As a self-appointed transatlantic Plum enabler, I am glad to see it make Muse's shortlist!

Predictably, I did wake up screaming in the night and came up with this other list, which I also reserve the right to change at any time...

    Opium Fleur de Shanghai
    Hermes Vanille Galante
    Ormonde Jayne Ta'if

  16. To be honest, I am so darn indecisive that if someone took the decision out of my hands and allocated me three perfumes fairly arbitrarily out of my fridge, I could probably get on with the rest of my life fairly well wearing just those, whatever they turned out to be...

  17. Hi Vanessa - like you, I am indecisive about small things...drives me nuts. And you're right, any three in my collection would probably not derail my life terribly. Still, there are a few I cannot imagine being without.

Kudos for changing your mind boldly!

  18. Hmmm. Sushi Imperiale, No. 19, and...

...yeah, that third choice is hard. Right now, it would be L'Eau Rare Matale, but I'm not positive that some other tea fragrance wouldn't come along and replace it.

  19. CF, go for Un Lys! It was in my slightly longer than shortlist, and if you pick it, I can legitimately borrow it. : - )

  20. Hi ChickenFreak - I know you love your Sushi Imperiale, and it is beautiful and interesting. No. 19 on the list is bold, indeed! Something could always come along to replace one of your choices, but picking your top three now is quite an accomplishment!

  21. Vanessa, influencing the choices of others is a very sly, but clever way to cover all of the just-in-case bases. Well done!

  22. It took me that long to come up with my choice... Ok, kidding - I'm just really behind on my reading but I'm catching up.
So, if I had to choose just three perfumes my list would be:
    1. Ta'if by Ormonde Jayne
    2. Climat by Lancome
    3. Heure Exquise by Annick Goutal

I love all these perfumes but if I had to use them and nothing else I would be very sad.

  23. Oh dear- here goes;

    Caleche by Hermes
    Isfarkand by Ormonde Jayne
    Joy by Patou
