We Three Kings - Frankincense

After the somber and dowdy Lyric Woman, I was doubtful of Lyric Man's ability to excite me.  And this project begged for exciting perfumes.

Not to worry, Holiday Magic was just around the corner.

Frankincense:  Lyric Man by Amouage

Lyric Man absolutely dances on my skin.  It lifts my spirits and makes me smile with its Jr. High girls locker room opening.  In spite of the whimsical top notes, the balsamic and piney essence of frankincense does lend weight and significance to the presence of Lyric Man.

But make no mistake about it, Lyric Man has a sense of humor.  Do any of you remember the hair gel of the 60's and 70's, Dippity Do?  Well, my nose does and, apparently, so does Lyric Man.  And while you might think that Lyric Man's incense would mirror that of a Catholic service, it actually brings to life the experience of a head shop.

Once the base notes arrive, through champagne and laughter, the aroma of a freshly bathed infant fills the air.  Every mother on earth knows this smell of damp skin, brand new hair and sweet baby breath.  Lyric Man taps into these memories and calls forth the image of a newborn surrounded by love and wonder...and frankincense.

  1. Freshly bathed infant and frankincense sounds like a lovely combo. On reflection (another nice Amouage scent!) the baby Jesus himself may have smelt a little of Lyric Man, assuming Mary didn't put his frankincense by for him to play with when he was older.

  2. I've only tried Lyric Woman - apparently I'm missing out on all the fun! Champagne, laughter and new baby smell sounds perfect for Christmas. Thank you, Vanessa.

  3. Gorgeous review. That last paragraph is just lovely.

Lyric Man sounds like a great day and night in a bottle. If they used this blog post as ad copy, they would sell a millon bottles in a snap.

  4. Lovely! This one confused me no end, on my brief try--the last thing I was expecting was the clean transparency that I got. I love your imagery, and will remember it for my second try.

  5. What a great review! I have to go check my sample and remember what it smells like but you certainly described it well (I might realize what the hair gel smelled like). :)

  13. Hi Angela - yes, I thought Lyric Man was actually quite 'feminine,' even though I resist those categorizations. Maybe I'm just responding to its liveliness compared to Lyric Woman. Thanks for your comment!

  14. Hi Marina - thanks for your comment! Yes, the smell of a freshly bathed infant stays with one forever. And it is lovely, indeed. This may be my favorite aspect of Lyric Man.

  15. Josephine, I have flitted into your blog from time to time and thought, "Wow, she's likes many of the same scents I do!"--meaning, a good number of the darker, dirtier fragrances. But here is one of the exceptions: I love Lyric Woman, don't care for Lyric Man at all. Even so, I love your description of it.

I've been trying to figure out what state you live in, from some of the photos that you took on your deck -- and your trip to Jackson. Are you from Wyoming? Such a beautiful state. I love the Jackson Hole area (like everyone else who's ever wandered that way, because what's not to love? So gorgeous).

  16. Hi Suzanne and welcome! You're right - I do like the darker, dirtier perfumes (can't help myself!).

I live in Salt Lake City, against the Wasatch mountains. Jackson Hole is one of our favorite places.

Have a lovely holiday and thanks for commenting! I hope to see you again.
